Do not put batteries or torches in household waste

Under UK law, portable batteries and electrical items must not be placed in general household rubbish or mixed recycling bins. They contain materials that can harm the environment if sent to landfill or incineration, and damaged lithium-ion cells can start fires in bin lorries and at waste sites.

Recycling portable batteries

Portable batteries include:

  • AA and AAA batteries
  • Button cell batteries
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries
  • Other removable batteries used in torches

You can take these to:

  • Battery collection points in most large supermarkets
  • Hardware and electrical retailers offering battery take-back
  • Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) run by your local council

Retailers selling more than 32kg of portable batteries a year are legally required to provide a free in-store collection service.

Torches with a built-in battery

If your torch has a built-in battery that cannot easily be removed, treat the whole product as waste electrical equipment:

  • Do not put it in general waste
  • Take it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre
  • Or use a retailer’s WEEE take-back service

Where a battery can be removed without damaging the torch, please take it out first and recycle it separately as described above.

Before you recycle: safety guidance

To reduce the risk of fire during storage and transport:

  • Cover exposed battery terminals with non-conductive tape
  • Store used batteries in a cool, dry place
  • Keep batteries away from metal objects and flammable materials
  • Never crush, pierce or incinerate a lithium-ion cell

Business customers

If you are disposing of batteries or electrical equipment as a business user, you may have additional duties under the Waste Batteries and Accumulators Regulations 2009 and the WEEE Regulations 2013. Please refer to GOV.UK guidance to confirm your obligations.
